Hi! I'm Katya MacDonald, a classical Pilates instructor, and sports therapist. I have always been a very athletic girl, starting soccer at the age of 6, going to provincials for basketball in middle school, being captain, provincial player, and field hockey coach, and riding and training horses in any free time I could find. Now despite all of that, I was incredibly quiet, I never would have imagined that I would ever spend a year training at Embody School of Pilates to become an instructor! In fact, if you had told me that in 2018 I was going to become an instructor and spend my life talking to people, I would have laughed. But believe me, anything is possible when you let yourself move.

I grew up in a construction family, my summer job was actually building and repairing houses with my dad (did you know I am actually quite skilled at stucco?). If there was one thing I know more than anything else, its that you can't build an Empire on a bad foundation! So in between all the hard work, I was training for field hockey, my dream sport, and that's where it started!

I fell into Pilates as a part of my training as a provincial level athlete. It was helping me maintain a balanced body despite playing such an unbalanced sport, Field Hockey. It also kept me injury free despite it being such a physically demanding sport. I soon found myself coming to Pilates as a way to also relax and reconnect my mind and body before and after games. It really helped with my performance on the field and my post-game recovery. Now all this is great, but I have to be honest with you, when I started Pilates I HATED IT! I hated it because I believed I was strong and tough.. well pilates showed me just how wrong I was about that. It showed me all of my weak spots and made them VERY obvious to everyone else around me... So competitive and grumpy Katya came out and I just had to go to every class I could. It didn't take me long to start wanting more and more out of Pilates, and then one day I found myself up in Canmore Alberta, standing nervously outside of my soon to be school, waiting for the best interview I've ever had!

Now here I am not only building that athletic foundation in all people, but I am also here to inspire everyone around me to get up, get moving and be the best versions of them they can be through believing in them, building a plan, training their minds and bodies, inspiring through my own effort and workouts, and making workouts fun again though play!

My Training

I acquired my Advanced Pilates Instructor Certification at Embody Pilates. Embody Pilates is the ONLY accredited pilates school in Canada, it is run out of Canmore Alberta by Bonny-Lynn Russel, a master instructor. The course was 850 hours long (minimum) and a year long. We covered all of the Classical Pilates repertoires and moves, Anatomy, Contraindications, every piece of equipment, and proper business practices.

While in school I logged over 1200 hours of teaching and practice hours. I believe that if I can't do the move, I have no right to teach it. Because of this, I scored the highest in my class at 99% overall! Now that I am graduated, I am still continuing my training by doing workshops with other master instructors from around the world, and I am still regularly getting in my full advanced level workouts so that I can properly teach every part of pilates to you!

Since then I've become:

  •  Certified Cycle class Instructor through Oranj Fitness. There we went over all the fun moves, choreography, and modifications to make sure everyone gets in an awesome, safe, and effective cardio workout!

  • NPCP certified Pilates instructor. This means that I am internationally recognized as a safe, properly trained, and REAL Pilates instructor!

  • Gymnastics coach. Yep! I am teaching and doing gymnastics and this is where some of my big inspirations come from!
