Mindful Meditation

In a previous post on Self care I had mentioned that I meditate. I wanted to dedicate a few posts to meditaion because it's something that makes a big difference in my life, and something that i'm still learning about everyday!


I practice Mindful Meditation. Now what does that mean? Well let's start with mindfulness. Mindfulness is the art of being present, aware of one's surroundings, and not being overwhelmed or reactive. Now if you know me, then you know that I struggle with getting overwhelmed and over booked, and therefore am not being mindful. So I, like most of you, am a big work in progress! I practice mindfulness by connecting to my breath in my Pilates practice, doing a body scan before sleep, and grounding myself before a day of teaching (more below). There are so many ways to pause and connect to your mind, body, and emotions so I'm not going to list them all here but will make a post with more examples and tips if you guys want! The reason why we need to practice mindfulness is because sometimes our thoughts and emotions are so strong and over-powering that we believe that we are them. All living beings are infact energetic. We are the watchers or guardians of our thoughts and emotions, NOT slaves to them!

I,like many other people, thought meditation was impossible. Clear my mind?! Yeah right! there is no way I can sit still for hours and not think of anything! then I learned what meditation really is. It's training of the mind. Not to be empty, but to be calm and quiet. Now that sounds good to me! Meditation is the exploration of your mind. It has no fixed destination, one way streets, or anything stagnant. The mind is not vacuumed clean of all thoughts, its simply calmed so we can venture into the inner workings of our mind. Doing this lets us connect to our senses, emotions, and thoughts aka connecting to Mind, Body, and Spirit (sound familiar?). Connecting our mind, body, and spirit helps us suspend judgement and lets loose our natural curiosity, which lets us experience our fullest self with warmth and kindness.


So how do we do this? Meditation does not have to be done with a professional, does not have to last for hours on end, and it can be completely personalized. What helps you get focused? is it counting mandala beads? a Mantra? a repeated sound? scent? For me, I need to close my eyes, and breathe. Now when I say breathe, I mean REALLY breathe. I will lead you through my process.


Get comfortable, find a position where there is no pressure or decompression. Now inhale, feel your ribs expand, and your muscles stretch and relax. Exhale. Exhale all the toxicity, the stress, aches, pains, and worries of the day. Inhale pure, warm, light oxygen, breathe it into the gaps that were once filled with stress, and exhale to release all the heavy feelings you have held onto. Once you are purified with light and warmth you can either dive deeper into the mind, letting your curiosity guide you, practice manifestation, or you can, when you're ready, open your eyes and carry on with your day feeling refreshed, light, and grounded.
